The Essential Reference on Vaccines! Are vaccines necessary? • What do they protect against? • How are they made? • Why are there so many shots? • Haven't they been found to be more dangerous than helpful? • Which type of polio vaccine is best? • What vaccines do my children and I need before traveling to another country? With all the vaccine choices available and all the vaccine controversy in the media, you have a lot of questions. You'll find the answers in Vaccines: What Every Parent Should Know, Revised Edition. This essential reference has been completely updated to include all the most up-to-date vaccine information: from why the rotavirus vaccine was recently suspended for use to when you might expect an AIDS vaccine to be available. Written in an accessible manner—and complete with schedules, recommendations, a travel section, and tips—this book helps you sort through all the confusing vaccination information to determine what is right for your family.

Amazon.com Review:
In the last couple of years, the controversy over whether or not to vaccinate children has raged among the parenting set. Opponents say that vaccines don't work and that they often cause more harm than good. Proponents say that vaccines do work, and that the saving of lives and the general improvement in health of the vast majority far outweighs the low incidence of mishaps from vaccines. What Every Parent Should Know About Vaccines, by doctors and infectious-disease experts Paul A. Offit and Louis M. Bell, weighs in heavily on the side of vaccination, but it's also an important book for those parents considering not vaccinating their children. Each vaccine and the disease it prevents--from the standard ones that every child gets to vaccines administered only in special cases, such as overseas travel--is explained in detail. Offit and Bell explain and dismiss vaccine myths, as well as discuss up-and-coming vaccines for the future. This book will answer many of the questions that your pediatrician may not fully explain to you.

Rated by buyers 1 out of 5 stars - What a joke.
We got duped and I want my money back. From the title you would think that this is a comprehensive, unbiased review of vaccines and that it would have something valuable to contribute regarding current controversies. Instead, the book is nothing but a big fat marketing tool for the vaccine manufacturers. Paul Offit is an undercover vaccine cheerleader. What they don't tell you is that he created the rotovirus vaccine and is on the Board of Advisors for Merk. The book is littered with pro-vaccine propaganda and gives the shallowest overview of contraindications, quickly dismissing any potential risks or concerns regarding vaccines. The authors' conclusion is: Parents can't know enough to make informed decisions, so they should just "trust the experts" (and blindly pump their children with monkey, cow, chicken, and human serum, aluminum, formaldehyde, and all the other garbage in these vaccines). Not to say that I am "anti-vaccine," but something a little less biased would have been nice. Don't waste
your time and money on this piece of garbage.

Rated by buyers 1 out of 5 stars - Very one-sided- intended to brainwash
I agree with the one commenter who said she would like to give this book negitive stars! Being a very first time mom, I am looking for books on vaccinations that list both sides of the story, and are not one sided. Not knowing which side this book was on, I requested it along with another book from my library titled "Vaccines- are they really safe and effective? by Neil Miller. I started reading Miller's book first, and couldn't put it down- he has almost 1,000 references from actual medical journals documenting his findings and statistics, and lists them as the facts they are- letting you make a decision for yourself. This book, by Offit, was very one-sided FOR vaccines. Although I have just started my research, what I have found interesting is that many people believe that the rate of these diseases dropped when vaccines were introduced (which offit claims in his book) when actual data states that the rate of people infected with these diseases was dropping for a while before the vaccinations were introduced due to better hygine and awareness. In many cases, the rate of people infected with the disease increased when people were given the disease.
I will keep looking out there for more books that can give valuable facts from both sides of the story, and this book wasn't one of them.

Rated by buyers 1 out of 5 stars - Utter hooey
If I could put negative stars I would. My mother bought this for me as a present when I was trying to figure out the vaccine thing for my children. I felt it was very superficial to begin with, but imagine my complete horror and utter DISGUST when I learned that Offit makes profits from vaccines AND was partly responsible for the marketing of the Rotavirus vaccine that was subsequently recalled because of causing intestinal blockage? And that he KNEW ahead of time that it was a risk and STILL voted to release this vaccine? It totally made me lose ANY faith at all left in him and the vaccine companies and made me go much more towards the not vaccinate side than anything else.

Rated by buyers 1 out of 5 stars - Lies and Misinformation
Page 14 says enough in two places:
"SIDS causes about 5,000 to 6,000 deaths each year in the United States. Because the disease affects children between 2 and 4 months of age, there is often a temporal relationship between the receipt of a DTP vaccine and SIDS." Notice the authors do not say, "the disease USUALLY affects children between 2 and 4 months," or "MOST OFTEN affects children between 2 and 4 months." They plainly state that it affects (implying that it ONLY affects) children between 2 and 4 months. This is contrary to what we've been hearing from pediatricians and the Back-to-Sleep Campaign for years. SIDS affects children under the age of ONE YEAR. If the authors can't even get this fact right, how can they be trusted for their other facts?

I continue: "there has never been any evidence that such 'bad lots' actually existed." Interesting. I know of a pediatrician who reported a 'bad lot' to VAERS which caused the deaths of 4 or 5 children, all who had received their DTP shot from the same batch.

These authors are in the business of pushing vaccines. There is certainly a strong bias in this book, one that left me with a bad taste in my mouth.

Rated by buyers 1 out of 5 stars - Misleading Title
The sole purpose of this book is to convince parents to vaccinate their babies when and how the medical establishment/drug industry wants them to.

My baby girl's pediatrician loaned me this book stating that "it presents both sides of the issues." She mistakenly left inside a form letter from the MERCK VACCINE DIVISION saying that they highly recommend the book for parents to "dispel all of the misinformation" out there. In my opinion, everyone should proceed with caution when a multi-billion dollar conglomerate gives their stamp of approval on a book.

Don't bother using this book as a reference. It doesn't even tell you about the ingredients (like mercury, formaldehyde and aluminum) contained in vaccines. It truly insulted my intelligence by being so one-sided. There are other books I've read (i.e. The Vaccine Guide, by Randall Neustaedter, OMD) that give both sides of the story.
