Editor's Notes and Comments:

Product Description:
Despite the increased focus on self-esteem over the past three decades, depression in children has continued to grow, now affecting a quarter of all kids today. To combat this trend, Dr. Seligman began the Penn Depression Prevention Project, the very first long term study aimed at 8 to 12 year olds. His findings were revolutionary, proving that children can be against depression by being taught how to challenge their pessimistic thoughts.

The Optimistic Child offers parents and teachers the tools developed in this study to teach children of all ages life skills that transform helplessness into mastery and bolster self-esteem. Learning the skills of optimism not only reduces the risk of depression but boosts school performance, improves physical health, and provides children with the self-reliance they need as they approach the teenage years and beyond. world of optimists is a bigger world, a world of more possibilities, says Seligman. Filled with practical advice and written in clear, helpful language, this book is an invaluable resource for caregivers who want to open up this world for their children.

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - Optimistic Child
This book is okay. It has some suggestions for how to deal with your child who is down, but overall is more analytical than I hoped for.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Very realistic
I highly recomend this book! Besides the title, which is a good hook, the work that this guy made regarding optimism and self-esteem is amazing. It clearly explains the big mistake we are doing in inflating false self-esteem in our children, and how we can see the results of doing it yesterday in adult people around us, if not ourselves.
If you are a conscious parent trying to give the best to your child, don't hesitate on reading this book. If you want to be a good parent instead of an easy one; if you want to have a mature, self-sufficient child in the future, read this book yesterday so you will know what you have to teach them (and what not)

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Learned Optimism -- wonderful simple wisdom!!!
I read many of Dr. Seligman's books for a paper and presentation I did in a Psychology class -- my professor was very impressed -- I also utilized his method with a 4 year old child who had the "I can't do it" attitude -- with the book and his mother purchased it -- within a matter of a month that little boy moved from "I can't do it" to "let me try to do it and if I need your help I'll ask you to help me" -- that was so amazing for his mother to hear -- and he started saying that the very first day I asked the child care teacher in his class if I could spend my lab hour with him when he told me "I can't do it" -- the project -- fingerpainting -- by the end of the hour with him - he was fingerpainting with his nose, elbows and was deliriously happy that HE COULD DO IT! (Now you may laugh and think "what is there difficult about fingerpainting?" -- well to most children and to adults there is not - but for this little one it was his "pattern" to very first respond to anything with "I can't do it" -- to move a child from the "I can't do it" to "let me try on my own" is a WONDERFUL accomplishment. And what I found with all of Dr. Seligman's books - read each and every footnote -- many of them are absolutely hilarious and full of common wisdom!! I would recommend them to anyone having a child that is having difficulty overcoming what we may perceive as simple obstacles -- an example is a little one that told me of his fear of kindergarten -- his fear was he was afraid he would not remember all his classmates names - I explained that he was a smart little boy and that within a few weeks he would learn all those names -- 2 weeks later I saw him on my bus - and he was overjoyed!! Yes he had learned all the names of all those classmates (his mom was so pleased that I had inadvertently learned something that had baffled her when she talked with him about kindergarten -- she had not been able to figure it out but he shared his "fear" with me and simple explanation that he did not know all the names of the children in his 4-K classroom when he started attending and learned all of them helped him to overcome a fear of kindergarten. I do hope this book is reprinted. I'm going to buy several used copies to give to some new parents I know.
