WIth the ongoing pressures for psychologists to practice evidence-based care, and the requirement insurance carriers have both for treatment goals, measurement of outcomes, and a focus on brief therapy, functional analysis provides a framework for achieving all of the above. In his 1996 book (Functional Analysis in Clinical Psychology, Wiley UK), Sturmey applied the functional behavioral approach to case formulation across a wide range of psychological disorders and behaviors. The book edited by Dr. Sturmey, at the same time provides us with an excellent explanation regarding struturalists and functionalists approaches, and talks about several types of behaviors classified as psychiatric. This text presents the analysis of the contingencies that can determine psychiatric problems as well as the radical behavioristic's interpretation of those behaviors and the treatment proposed due to that interpretation. It is an useful tool for clinicians and teachers that work with behavior therapy or even for applied behavior analysts.
