Product Description:
Question:
* Do you feel shy and self-conscious in social situations?
* Are you plagued with self-doubts about how you come across to others?
* Do you feel physically sick with worry about certain situations that involve interacting with others?
* Do you make excuses, or even lie to avoid the social situations you dread?
* Do you make important decisions based on whether you'll have to participate in groups or speak in front of others?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you're not alone. Millions of people experience social anxiety of painful shyness to such a degree that it disrupts their daily lives. In fact, as many as one out of every eight Americans will at some point suffer from what's called social anxiety disorder, or social phobia.

Social anxiety disorder is a real problem. But fortunately, it's also one that can be overcome.

Drs. Barbara and Greg Markway, psychologists and experts in the field, coach you every step of the way in this warm, easy-to-read, and inspiring book. You'll learn how social anxiety disorder develops, how it affects all aspects of your life, and most importantly, how to chart your course to recovery.

Rated by buyers 2 out of 5 stars - Not the greatest...
Painfully Shy really did not ease my struggle. I bought the book on the premises that I might be a social phobic, but I was still as lost after reading it as I was before. Some sections were helpful, but it just wasn't enough. I was sort of disappointed. But it wasn't a total loss.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - help for social anxiety
Decribes "exposure exercises" to perform to help overcome social anxiety. Recommended by a doctor I work with to his patients. Helps you to feel like you are not alone in your shyness.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Great book.
This is a wonderful book. It's well written and informative, and most of all, it's helpful. There are nice touches in the writing style, as well. In the patient profiles, for example, the author mentions a patient's concerns including feeling as though something is "wrong" with them (emphasis on the quotation marks). The quotation marks, in my opinion, signal to the reader that "hey, perhaps I should reframe my feelings about what "wrong" means in the context of a human being". Things like that take the writing to the subsequent level of quality and insight, in my opinion.

Also, I won't reiterate everything else that's been said already in the reviews, but I disagree the reviewers who said too much of the book is theory and not enough is devoted to actually helping the reader overcome shyness. On the contrary, the very first two chapters are devoted to theory and background; the remaining NINE are devoted to self-help. That's over eighty-percent.

I'd recommend this book highly.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Shyness
I recommend this book if you are shy..or very shy..the writers of this book overcame their shyness..so many details on things we shy people avoid..and ways to help yourself and to get help. Simply Amazing!!

Rated by buyers 1 out of 5 stars - Disappointing
As someone suffering from social anxiety disorder, this book was extremely disappointing. It focuses almost entirely on what causes anxiety and the "suggestions" are not helpful at all. I felt as though all this book did was explain to me what it felt like to have this phobia. If you are looking to research the disorder, it would be a great book. If you are looking for help in battling social anxiety this book will be of no use to you, as I am guessing you already know what it feels like.
