Product Description:
Incorporating the most successful theories of second language acquisition, À vous! offers both inductive and deductive grammar presentations, along with practical vocabulary and rich coverage of French and Francophone cultures. The five skills and the National Standards for Foreign Language Learning are integrated into each chapter, with special emphasis on cross-cultural comparisons. The À vous! program's innovative and comprehensive introduction to French language and culture encourages students to link an analytical approach to studying the French language with a personal, sensorial experience, much as they would encounter in the French-speaking countries of the world. They are given the opportunity to explore the varied cultures represented by the French language and the delightful flavors of French and Francophone cuisine through recipes presented in the textbook and in the video. Realia featured throughout the À vous! program provide a visual approach to culture, while audio and video clips of native speakers expose students to the various accents and dialectical differences within the Francophone world.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - MERCI!
This text is a very good beginner level or relearning material for French. Its real strenght isn't in its text however, but rather in how it connects students with activities and worksheets as well as pronuciation links on line which when used with the book work smashingly. However the cd which comes with the text has been a little less to alot less helpful. But still an excellent product.

Rated by buyers 1 out of 5 stars - Bubble wrap please!
I received this text book much later than expected. Upon arrival(in a regular mail envelope-NO PADDING)an entire corner of the envelope was torn off from the book pushing through. The book was all torn up, cover and all. So the book arrived long after class started, and I can't even sell it because it's in such bad condition. "LIKE NEW", yea, maybe before shipping!

Rated by buyers 1 out of 5 stars - A Poorly Organized Textbook
This textbook was used for my introductory French course. Luckily I have taken French for many years in High School, I cannot imagine having to actually learn from this book. While the graphics were good and often went along with what the text was saying, the text itself was unhelpful. Instead of presenting a few verbs and the situations in which they might have been used, or perhaps even just a situation (At The Theatre) and given you the basic vocabulary necessary for that situation, while tying in the conjugation of the necessary and relevant verb, this text most often just presented you with specific phrases and then translated them. To me this seemed a ridiculous and unhelpful way to teach French. If you are looking for a class that will tell you how to say exactly what you want to know, then this is a good book for you. If you are looking for a class to teach you the basics of a language, with the eventual goal of fluency, then I wish you luck. It will take a lot of dedication to understand the language as it is presented to you by this text.

Rated by buyers 1 out of 5 stars - Absolutely terrible
We had to use this book, along with the Student Activites Manual, for my college First Year French I class and will have to use it subsequent semester for First Year French II. The book is just awful. Our chapter tests came directly from the teacher's edition and they didn't match up with what we are studying at all. This book will spend pages on one thing and then one or two paragraphs on something else; then, when the test comes the test covers mostly that thing that we only had one or two paragraphs on and doesn't include anything that we spent several pages on. This is really frustrating. In our class we had two weeks (four class sessions) for each chapter. When you are moving that fast it is imperative that you be able to focus your studying. As much as we would like to think it is about the French, let's be honest, it is about the grade. I never felt like this book was giving me a fair shot at getting a good grade. I got to where I didn't even bother reading the book unless I had to to answer homework questions. I just pulled out all the vocab, grammar and verbs and sough out alternative sources to help me learn them. I ended up with an A- in the class but only because I spent hours and hours studying and our instructor curved the grades. When you are a full-time college student you should be able to rely on the study materials you are forced to purchase for you classes. You shouldn't have to seek out alternative sources to get a good grade.

I can't imagine someone who is relying only on this book, without prior French experience, could acheive a grade higher than a C. I hope my college ditches this book subsequent year. It's definitely not worth the money.

Required for my completion of Intro French. Personally, not the best french textbook in the world.
