Product Description:
Jonathan Safran Foer emerged as one of the most original writers of his generation with his best-selling debut novel, Everything Is Illuminated. Now, with humor, tenderness, and awe, he confronts the traumas of our recent history.
Nine-year-old Oskar Schell has embarked on an urgent, secret mission that will take him through the five boroughs of New York. His goal is to find the lock that matches a mysterious key that belonged to his father, who died in the World Trade Center on the morning of September 11. This seemingly impossible task will bring Oskar into contact with survivors of all sorts on an exhilarating, affecting, often hilarious, and ultimately healing journey.

This book is hilarious, and yet very thought provoking. I may warn you however, it is not for everybody, and you have to have a very open mind going into it. This is honestly the best book that I have ever read. It follows many themes, the death of Oscar's father in 9/11, his grandfather, a mysterious key, all of these themes are intertwined to from a great book.

This is not a novel about 9/11, don't worry. When a friend gave this to me I pushed it aside not wanting to revisit such an awful subject matter as 9/11 in my leisure time. I eventually picked it up and was surprised that it didn't dwell on the hurt of that day our the months and years that followed. Instead it parallels two stories, one of our modern terror and how people deal with it and one of the bombing in Dresden and how that generation grew past it. These two stories changed my perspective on life.
Months after reading this novel I find myself thinking about it - stopped at a blue light, cruising through the grocery store, sitting down to read the paper. This novel has meat. It makes you think. And it gives you a constant craving for coffee with something sweet. I may not know you or your taste in literature but I know you will find something to cherish in this novel.

How do you write a book about as difficult a subject as 9/11? Foer does this brilliantly. The approach, from the point of view of a child, is perfect and fantastically creative.

Hands down, one of the best pieces of modern literature. Jonathan Safran Foer reaches in, touches your heart, and then breaks it again and again. The relationship between Oscar, his grandmother, and everyone he encounters during his journey is truly touching. I was actually sad when I finished the novel because I could no longer be a part of the characters' world. Very well done. A definite 'must-read' for everyone.
