Editor's Notes and Comments:

Product Description:

The college town of Windale, Massachusetts is proud of its colonial heritage -- including the legend of a dark witches' coven dating back three hundred years. No one in Windale actually believes in witches, or imagines that the blood-chilling history of the Salem era could repeat itself. But three people, unknown to one another, are experiencing vivid nightmares of palpable horror. They alone can sense that a dreadful presence is working its way into their waking lives -- and is coming for them.

On a crisp autumn night deep in the New England woods, a young woman's harmless channeling ritual unwittingly opens the floodgates to terrifying forces that have, until then, lived only in dreams: a breed of demonic creatures with the power to shatter an unsuspecting town.

Amazon.com Review:
'The woods watched. The trees held their breath, as if afraid to startle away the timid visitor to this secret place. But Abby felt no impulse to flee this quiet place. Just the opposite, in fact. She'd found a new secret place of her own.' With the horrors hidden in Abby's secret place, Wither offers a promising debut horror novel from screenwriter J.G. Passarella.

Wendy Ward, student at Windale, Massachusett's Danfield College, is smitten with all things New Age and magical. When not at home (her dad is the president of the college, so it is a nice home) she whiles away her days in the Crystal Path, a shop full of tarot decks, books on witchcraft, and assorted herbs. Her life seems typical for an offbeat, careworn coed. But as readers learn from the other two primary characters of the novel, something evil is awakening in Windale. First, 8-year-old Abby MacNeil has some terrifyingly vivid dreams that lead her to discover the gravestones of legendary 17th-century witches. Then, Professor Karen Glazer, an unwed expectant mother, begins to see visions of goblins attacking her unborn child. As the novel unfolds, it becomes clear that Wendy's apparently harmless rituals have tapped into--and unleashed--the aged forces of evil that had been buried in colonial America. --Patrick O'Kelley

User popularity level: out of 5 stars

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - Like champagne, starts with a pop but fizzles out
In the beginning, the author does a great job of establishing the atmosphere and background for the story. Wither has a compelling start and main characters that I initially cared about, but it became a bit dull and predictable at the halfway point. The plot and pacing remind me of TV horror movies from the 1970s.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Wither will get you
I really loved this book. If you're into horror stories with a little supernatural craziness, this book will have you hooked. Also look for Wither's Rain(book 2) and Wither's Legacy(book 3).

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - Well-written, slightly predictable horror novel
Windale Massachusetts is a small town with a past. In 1699 three women were hanged as witches. Now the town uses their past to lure tourists. What no one realizes is the women really were witches and they're still alive, hibernating in a barn deep in the woods. But every 100 years they awaken, choosing someone's dreams to appear in and feed from their energy. It's 1999, and Wendy Ward is one of the women having terrible dreams. She is also a modern witch practicing white magic. She performs a ritual meant to dispel her nightmares but instead welcomes the ancient witches into the physical world, where they pursue Wendy, a pregnant professor at the college and a small girl.

Wither is a pretty good supernatural novel. Passarella creates believable characters and keeps the story moving forward well. Some of the situations are predictable and he veers into purple prose occassionally. It's not going to blow you away but it's an enjoyable read.

Rated by buyers 1 out of 5 stars - Boring
After reading the reviews I was really looking foward to this book but I found it so dull that no one could force me to read the rest of the trilogy.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - You Don't Have To Work Too Hard
Wither is the type of horror novel that really does not horrify. Its too much fun. This engaging novel by John Passarella and Joseph Gangemi, under the psuedonym J.G. Passarella, is a supernatural tale that is much like a ghost story told around a campfire. Kind of scary but ultimately not really dangerous. Interesting historical references to the Salem witch trials and a well researched presentation of Wiccans (who are really just tree-huggers in religious trappings) are written in a non-threatening way but they propel the story forward. Believable characters and a cartoon-like 300 year old monster presented in straight forward prose that is easy to follow makes Wither a great leisure read. Not too serious in tone, this book is an amiable companion for the beach or on an airplane. One complaint: An editor would have been usefull because at 438 pages Wither is a bit overweight and could have easily been editted down about 50 pages with no damage done to the story.
