Jenny McPartland a divorced mom of two little girls who works in an art gallery meets the handsome artist Erich Krueger and foolishly marries him within weeks, and moves to his farm in Minnesota.
Everyone she meets comments on how much she resembles Erich's deceased mother Caroline, and it grossed me out that she was stupid enough to comply with her freak of a husband's request/demand to always wear his mother's nightgown for their intimate encounters(which thankfully are not graphically detailed). It is wonderful to read such a well done creepy suspense without profanity and graphic sex and gore. Terrific Gothic-type tale.
Things get strange and suspenseful almost from the beginning, and the tension never lets up until the end. This book is a definite 'page-turner' and I would suggest not starting it,unless you have the time to read it through,as I imagine it would be very aggravating to have to stop, before the end.
This was my very first book by Mary Higgins Clark and I was so pleased with it,that I plan to check out her other work.

This was a wonderful book. There are many twists and turns. I thought this book was one of a kind and even though many say its too scary, its a good thing. You will never be able to the book down.
It takes place as a women who marries a wealthy artistic man. She moves into his beautiful house and lives in rolaty and absolute perfection. She then feels the strangness of her husband and learns why he is gone "painting". She is soon caught in a chain of terrifying events.
This a masterpiece and I can assure you that you will want to read more of Mary's Books. I strongly recomend this book!
Even though I am only 11, this wasnt too scary for me. I think kids my age would like it

This is one of the best books by the author that I've ever read. Prior to this one my favorite was The Lottery Winner.

I found this book on my mom's bookshelf, and picked it up just so I could have something to read while waiting at a doctors office. I didn't expect it to be any good since I never liked Mary Higgins Clark novels, and I was totally wrong. I couldn't wait to get home from the doctors office to finish it. The story is very gripping and scary, everything you read makes it seem like the husband is behind it all, but all the evidence points towards the wife. By the middle of the book you end up with about five more suspects. It had me holding my breath without even realizing it a couple of times and I read it in one sitting, which is quite a feat since It usually takes me a couple of days to finish a book. It really was a great read and if you're looking for a good short book to take along with you on a plane ride or for a beach read this is definitely it. Just be careful if you read it on a beach because you won't be able to get up from the book and WILL get a bad sunburn lol. definitely a 5 star book.

As a longtime fan of hers, I read this book but did not enjoy it much, as it seemed like she was trying something odd and new, completely alien geo. territory, strange characters. If you look at an older copy of this, like a library copy, you see in the earlier editions she dedicated it to her SECOND husband, and at that time she LIVED in Minnesota! Apparently that marriage was brief and unhappy, she returned to the NY/NJ area where she now lives and remarried a few years ago to her current husband. there has never been any reference to the 2nd marriage or to her life in Minn. again.
