I love this book! It has great pictures and lots of easy to understand information. In fact, I bought it based on the tree and shrub section. I have many wonderful nature books but when studying the inside of the trunk of a tree, this book presented the information perfectly! Although I myself do not entirely accept the evolution theory (as it is presented to us in school) It is obvious evolution occurs around us. I myself chose to permanent marker out all the evolution theory stuff my little children were not ready to make an uninformed decision on without my involvment. The reason for this review was to say that I really, really appreciated the many, MANY times the book presented controversial information NOT as FACT like it is usually presented to our children but more as " this is the best estimated guess of scientists today... and scienteists used to think this...but were proved wrong when we learned this..." I think this is a much more realistic view of how science works. We know what we know yesterday and we will know different things tomorrow. I guess Im trying to say the book is awesome and it handles the science talks very responsibly and maturely and even though there were pages I did not personally believe in and chose not to teach my children -- I would not hessitate in purchasing it again!

This book is very helpful for children who love to read and like to learn new things. However, it's frank discusion on one page about sex, makes it inappropriate for young readers. Thanks to the Big Book of Knowledge, my nine year old now understands the workings of sex and feels confident enough to explain it to the uninformed of his age group and younger! There should be a disclaimer on this book for that type of content!

I cannot praise this amazing, wonderful book enough. I bought it for my sharp, curious four-year-old daughter and she loves it, often requesting a reading from it at bedtime instead of her storybooks. It is truly a "big book of everything." It's sections cover human anatomy and physiology, animals, plants, the universe, planet earth, basic physics and chemistry, and an extensive "key facts" section in the back of the book. Although I am college educated, reading it has been like taking a refresher course, and I have learned many new things from this book. It is factually accurate, SPECTACULARLY illustrated, visually interesting, very readable, and somehow, believe it or not, excellent and useful for persons aged 4 through adult. If I could, I would buy every child a copy.
