I just noticed that this very cool book didn't have a single review, so I'll just rectify that...
IA is an innovative and visually effective treatment of American history as seen through material culture. The two-facing-pages- per-topic format both make for a punchy style and make it unnecessary to plough through the whole thing in order to get 'the point.' This book blurs the edges between academic and popular writing, and (in spite of the silly comments of the Library Journal, reproduced by Amazon either above or below this) is full of human stories. Yes, the book is theory laden. And perhaps I'm innured by reading so much archaeobabble over the years, but I didn't feel hit over the head by it.
This book should definately be on every historical archaeologist's shelf--and at every public library too. Take that, Library Journal.
