This was what we needed, someone to hold our hand and say "it's ok". This book explains to you why your children 'spaz' after meals, can't sit still, wander, blurt out, etc. Our life at home is so much more peaceful with this book as our guide to what we should and shouldn't put in our bodies. We're all doing it, more organic, and we're so much better for it! Thank you!!!!

I'm new to the Feingold Program (1 week) and have already seen the changes in my children's behavior. The information Jane Hershey provides in this book is motivation enough to change the way and what you eat. My 8 year old son already stopped craving sweets and junk food and he is calmer and behaves the way I've been raising him for the past 8 years.
Just one example of many things that have changed: when I'd take him grocery shopping, he'd be on a different aisle than me, looking at things, not paying attention, or begging me to buy some toy or junk food. Now, I keep turning around to see where he is because he's so quiet and he's right there besides me, following me willingly throughout the store. In fact, he's telling his 4 year old brother to follow Mommy. Temper flare ups are rare now too.
I've chosen to eliminate high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup and MSG as well as the additives. I'm also buying more organic fresh fruits and vegtables, just thinking about pesticides makes my skin crawl. You read this book, you'll never want to eat these things, let alone feed them to your kids again!
My grocery bill really hasn't increased that much. I'm buying more food at Whole Foods and Trader Joe's, but now I've eliminated a lot of (convenient) foods from Costco, Target and my overall bills are better since I'm not shopping there as much and buying items I really don't need. Those of you who shop at Costco know what I'm talking about!
I'm buying three more copies to give to my friends for their kids. It's too important not to share this valuable information.

My 7 year old has always had learning and behavior difficulties. When he was around 5 I kept telling myself he was just a "typical" boy and would outgrow them. When he was 6 I told myself he was just a little behind and would catch up. However when he turned 7 and still could not read, write, talk properly or even sit still for more than 30 seconds and on some days would turn into a demon of a boy that literally scared me.... I knew something was not normal. He has always a short attention span, speech impairment, terrible night mares, sporadic aggression, and poor motor skills. But it didn't make any sense because he is SOO smart in other ways. I knew he didn't have a learning problem because he is capable of learning and I knew he shouldn't have behavior problems because most days he is the sweetest person ever, just has all those days when he can't control his rage. It didn't add up.
For years I've questioned my parenting skill . I never could understand how he could be so sweet one day and just plain evil the next. He knew he was different and I know it hurt him, I've heard him asking his sister to help him be better, "Rebecca please show me how to be like you so mommy won't cry in the bathroom anymore."
I started to search for a solution.
One night while searching online I came across a website about the Feingold Program: www.feingold.org
When I saw the list of symptoms my mouth dropped open....every single one was the same as the list I had made just a few days before about Jarod. I finally had my answer.
Jarod is severally sensitive to synthetic food additives and salicylates!
The Feingold Program focuses on eliminating artificial additives (artificial colorings or dyes, flavorings, artificial sweeteners, and the preservatives BHT, BHA, and TBHQ ) and salicylates from the diet of children who are sensitive to these chemicals. For some amazing stories about other children similar to Jarod go here: www.feingold.org/pg-success.html
These chemicals "short circuit" his brain and he is not able to function properly with them in his system.
I e-mailed the organization and in just a short time I received a wonderful reply from the director. She confirmed that the problems Jarod was having would probably be helped by the Feingold Program. She quickly mailed off a copy of the book "What Can't My Child Behave" which I recommend to every parent to read. After I put the kids to bed I opened it up and read and read....until 4 in the morning. I was overwhelmed by the possibility that Jarod could be "normal" someday. He would be able to attend a sleep over, be at ease in public and enjoy a good book. Reading the stories from the other moms made me cry, I was not alone!
I wish that every mom could read this book as it is information that everyone needs to know. We have been on the diet for a few weeks now and Jarod is perfect and as long as he does not eat any unsafe foods he is normal. I am keeping track of his progress in a blog and you can view it here: http://jarods-diet.livejournal.com/
I am so thankful for Jane Hersey and all the other wonderful people who volunteer their time to help moms like me!

This book was so eye-opening and gave us not just hope but a plan that there would be an alternative to medicine. It is the very first book we read. Once you read this book, keep reading others on the same topic.

This book really changes lives. I recommend it as a teacher and as a parent. It's inexpensive but the information is so important. Nutrition really does impact our children's behavior.
