This is the book that American education sorely needs. As an activist for American educational improvement, I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
The book opens by discussing why students should study math in the very first place. The author puts aside standard explanations to provide a different, refreshingly honest perspective. The book then goes on to discuss the Asian system of teaching math from a cognitive perspective, but in simple, easy to understand language. The book continues with an analysis of motivational methods, clearly explaining why some work and others do not. The remainder of the book goes into more specifics, discussing the SAT and SAT, self perceptions, gender differences, and finishes with a discusion of advanced teaching methods.
Whether you are a parent, educator, or activist, this book is an absolute must. Without question, this is one of the most interesting and unusual books about teaching math, and is exactly what American education needs right now.

I can still remember when American math education was the best in the world. This book shows us how we can surpass even that level.
"The Equation for Excellence" is written for parents, but I think that teachers, administrators, and policy makers could benefit strongly from reading it at it as well. In surprisingly clear and understandable language, this book discusses both motivational and cognitive considerations. Are your children/students uninterested in math? Do they lack motivation? You will find a lot of the information in this book pertinent. Are they motivated, but unable to succeed? Again, you will probably find what you need here. Are they doing well but you want them to do better? Take a look.
One particularly positive aspect of this book is that it is remarkably concise. I read through it in a couple hours. And yet this is the most comprehensive book on math education I have read thus far. An eye opening experience, this book should be read by every parent, teacher, and educational policymaker in America.

This book is right on target, and extremely timely as the United States continues to fall behind in mathematics. Every parent and teacher should read this book.
The book begins by talking about motivation, and then moves to address the cognitive issues. In the chapter called "The Asian System", the author shows how students with weak foundations slip through the cracks, and then shows how to address these issues. The book also discusses motivational strategies, including both long term and short term motivation, the SAT, self perception, and advanced topics.
This book is unlike any other math teaching book I have read (and I have read a LOT). A unique perspective combined with brilliant analysis, the Equation For Excellence is a must for any parent or teacher.

...anyone anything -- especially math...basically he has contrived a system which he appears to claim is based upon "Asian methods"...this system involves a hour daily of drills in basic math in addition to the child's homework; also mandated is random drilling at other times -- e.g. while driving somewhere...well, one could easily imagine that an extra hour of study plus drilling would certainly improve something regardless of the method used...however, getting the child to comply is an issue the author choses to ignore...and the effects on the child's attitude towards math and learning in general are ignored as well...moreover, the author presents not a single piece of concrete evidence that such methodology works -- no cases studies, no supporting data period!...even the author's website doesn't offer a single reference from a satisfied customer!...I think this is just the author's imagination at work and not any sort of bonafide educational approach to teaching math.
...5/23/08 -- an addendum to what I posted above...as best as I can determine Mr. Vohra has little educational experience beyond some tutoring he did while at Brown University...and I doubt working as an "actuary at GEICO" provided much experience in applied education...and here is a link to a webgroup he runs:
http://education.meetup.com/75/members/6824208/
...if that's a current photo he looks like he's barely out of college...and judging from his website he has been in the education "business" for less than two years -- hardly enough time to become either a "legend in the world of exclusive private education" or a "most inspirational and sought-after educational" speaker...I certainly don't agree with the book and now even have serious doubts about its author.

"The Equation for Excellence" is an excellent guide to parents as well as teachers as to the necessary steps that should be taken to improve the math as well as the analytical skills of their students. As a professor of physics at a local university, I have seen a drastic decrease in the analytical skills of students in freshman physics. This problem is directly related to the student's problem solving skills. I strongly endorse the Asian Method and other methods suggested in this book that develop the student's interest in mathematics and other analytical disciplines
