Editor's Notes and Comments:

Product Description:
When a group of caring parents got together and start talking about their experiences with autism, so much information was shared that those with newly diagnosed family members who had myriad questions wanted to be in on the conversations! Eleven authors who have children at various ages and stages with autism, and one adult with autism, have collaborated to give everyone a better understanding about the needs of families and people who are dealing with this disability. We began as friends sharing information on the LDS_Autism List serve through Yahoo! Groups on the Internet, and decided to collect our stories and ideas for the many others who are living with autism in whatever form. We are sure that this collection will be valuable to more than just members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but to all families, friends, and teachers of people with autism. The ideas we have are certainly often a product of our beliefs, but anyone who knows anyone with autism can benefit from what we have written. We have high hopes that what we have written can give ideas, hope, and coping skills to everyone whose lives are touched by autism. So, from all of us, here is our effort to share our combined wisdom from living with autism so those who help us and touch our lives can understand.

______________
The baffling disability autism is estimated to affect one in every 160 individuals. "Talk with Me: Experiences with Autism in the LDS Community" (AuthorHouse, 2005) is intended as a resource for helping families of autistic individuals of all faiths and those who care for them. Twelve families from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) share their experiences as they came to the realization there was a problem, then took steps to help their family members affected by autism.

In "Talk with Me," Kathy Weatherford and Natalie Wright have compiled the stories of eleven parents and one affected individual dealing with autism. The seventeen individuals they describe who are affected by autism range from age 2 to 30, boys and girls, non-verbal teenagers to high-functioning individuals. Three of the older individuals were not diagnosed until after the age of twelve, despite symptoms that would have clearly led to a diagnosis had they been small children today.

Autism results from a neurological disorder that causes difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication and social interactions. Individuals with autism will have difficulty communicating and living a normal life, even if they are not profoundly impaired by the disorder.

Since Mormon congregations are strictly geographically based and kept to approximately 500-800 individuals, it is likely that "any given Mormon congregation will include an autistic individual, but at most only a few autistic individuals." Despite the beneficial "small village" nature of the Mormon congregation size, it means "most everyone in that congregation is dealing with those autistic individuals from a relatively uninformed standpoint, putting a burden for education on the family of the autistic individual."

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has over 12 million members worldwide and may have an autistic sub-population as large as 75,000 individuals, with an estimated 35,000 in the United States alone.
