Richard Lathe has provided a comprehensive and well-written exposition of the science exploring the causes of autism. He thoughtfully describes the condition, explains how the evidence shows that there is a real increase in the incidence of autism over the past two decades, and gives persuasive evidence that the increase is most likely due to environmental factors, and is largely, although not completely, attributable to children's increased exposure to heavy metals.
Dr. Lathe expertly reviews the hypothesis that autism is primarily a heritable disorder. While acknowledging that genetic susceptibility plays a role in autism etiology - as it does in many diseases, Dr. Lathe shows why a genetic explanation alone is completely insufficient to account for the physiological mechanisms that cause most cases of autism the marked increase we have seen of autism among children.
Dr. Lathe also shows how the effect of environmental toxins on the limbic brain are the most plausible sources of explanation for the increase of autism and related disorders that exhibit similar symptoms.
Of special note is the fact that Dr. Lathe is a co-investigator if a recent study that has linked mercury toxicity to autism. In a study of children in a French clinic Lathe and others analyzed mercury and heavy metal toxicity through use of a technique called urinary porphyrin profiling analysis. This method, validated by more than twenty years of research and its use in detecting lead toxicity, is an accurate measure of heavy metal toxicity and body burden, and can determine mercury toxicity with specificity. The study showed that mercury toxicity was clearly associated with autism in the more than 200 French children who were the subject of the study.
Dr. Lathe's extraordinarily readable but still highly authoritative and exhaustively documented book is a valuable addition to the literature on the physiological causes and potential treatment of autism.
