Product Description:
Living with Panic Disorder is a collection of poignant short stories written by panic disorder sufferers throughout the country. The pieces describe, often in shocking detail, the tormented lives of people living day to day with this condition. Panic disorder is a devastating but highly treatable condition that affects one out of every ten people. The illness is so pervasive that many people go through life in hiding, completely isolated for fear of shame and ridicule. The stories in this anthology will help normalize panic disorder to the masses and begin the process of dispelling the myth that only mentally unstable people suffer from this condition. My hope is that this book will also help the many who are still suffering alone to reach out and get treatment. Reading about one person’s experience would not be powerful enough. I needed an anthology of pained voices from all walks of life to relate gritty, descriptive accounts of their struggles in their own words. The following stories were written by courageous individuals whose lives were forever changed by the power of panic disorder.

... then this is the book for you. Reaching across every social, psychological and emotional strata imaginable, this collection of essays takes us into the hearts and homes of the 'typical' panic disorder sufferer - of which of course there are none. Each author tells his or her own story in his or her own words, touching such important aspects as when and why the disorder struck, how deeply it affected their lives, how they came to make the tough decisions (such as meds or no meds, therapy or no therapy) that let them reclaim their lives.
I especially enjoyed finding my own story in the most unlikely places, of finding, even after 9 years of relative anxiety-free living, the validation that yes, this WAS real, no, I was NOT making it up, and that the choices I made in my own healing were pertinent and right for me.
This is also a must-read for the partners of people with Panic Disorder. You know, a little 'light' read for those 2am visits to the ER. (Humour - a PD household 'must-have'.) Truthfully, this book will help everyone involved understand and be more fully present for their loved one as they navigate this insidious labyrinth known as Panic Disorder.
I only wish it had been written 10 years ago ....

Although I don't suffer from panic disorder, I know quite a few people who have at some point in their lives, and it was touching to read such a varied collection of experiences. I would highly recommend this as an enlightening read or as a gift!

I recently read this book and was really touched by the stories contained within. There were a variety of different perspectives that anyone who has ever suffered from Panic Disorder could relate to. Its a great read. The author, who collected the stories, is also a psychotherapist in the Los Angeles area and is supposed to be one of the best in the field.
