Product Description:
She sits alone every day in the cafeteria. His behavior annoys the other kids and no one wants to have him in their group. She can t carry on a conversation. Sound familiar? The desire to fit in and belong is universal, and at no time is this more evident than during the middle and high school years. Kids with conditions such as Asperger Syndrome, attention deficit disorder, learning disabilities, behavior disorders, as well as English language learners, often face even greater social challenges, resulting in feelings of isolation. Not only are they often ignored by peers, many are the object of teasing and even bullying. In addition, their social isolation prevents them from engaging in the numerous social interactions needed to become socially proficient. With Open Arms: Creating School Communities of Support for Socially Challenged Kids provides practical, easy-to-use techniques for even the busiest school personnel. Using familiar case studies in an easy-to-read format, this manual provides step-by-step instructions for how to implement Circles of Friends, participation in extracurricular activities, and professional Learning Teams to create both accepting peers and staff. Written by a teacher in the trenches, the book includes reproducible worksheets, Learning Team and Book Club study guides, Circle meeting forms and activities, charts, and checklists ... everything you need to create your own supportive community for the kids you care about.

This book is written by the 2007 Nebraska Teacher of the Year. She is an awesome teacher who works with some of the most challenging students. This book is a hands-on book to help teachers in developing a support group for youth with Asbergers, ADHD, students of other cultures trying to fit in, or just kids that may feel "different", etc. Excellent resource.

Too many times we see the child sitting alone, isolated by the traumas of autism or other disabilities that affect socialization. Parents and teachers struggle to reach these children. Their peers ostracize them, ill equipped and reluctant to include them in their social circles. With Open Arms offers a multifaceted approach to assist those who work with students with specific social and educational needs. The text not only offers realistic and accessible approaches to engage students with weak social skills, it also illustrates how to include all members of the school community. This is a must have for any educator, parent, or friend of an individual who struggles to navigate social nuances.

I couldn't put down this fabulous "tool belt" of a book brimming over with "recipes" for creating positive social interaction. It's geered to assist PEERS (classmates, aides, teachers, bus drivers etc) to help teach social skills to students who need more direction in this area (including those on the autism spectrum, severe ADD, ELL or those with behavior disorders). Basically, the premise is that IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO RAISE A CHILD...the book provides a systematic and easy-to-follow approach to creating a positive environment for those who interact with these students. EDUCATE THE PEERS...that's the key...get the "village" involved and many of the social skills will surface and many of the problematic behaviors will disappear. I wish that I had this resource years ago. We need to educate the peers if we want them to be successful in peer interaction...this book provides tools for adults to do this...many great ideas. I especially liked the Book Club idea...one from a peer to student perspective and the other is a Book Club for the adults involved (to educate them about the challenges the kids experience). I honestly feel that all staff should be part of this program. It does take some time and effort, but probably not as much time and effort as dealing with problems that arise from problematic behavior time and time again. GREAT RESOURCE.
